JioCinema made the IPL free. 3.21 crore watched the final at once.

transcript

About 32 million people. One match. Watching at the same moment. And JioCinema charged them nothing. Watch what free does to your peak.

The previous partner kept the IPL behind a paywall. So the audience was only the people who paid. Then Viacom18 paid 23,758 crore rupees for the digital rights. And gave the 2023 season away. Free to watch. Now anyone with the app could turn up. And they did.

The opener peaked at 1 point 6 crore, watching at once. Over 2 point 5 crore app downloads in a single day. A record, JioCinema said.

But here's the catch. That was just the opener. The peak kept climbing. All season.

Opener: 1 point 6 crore. 12 April. Dhoni's CSK nearly pulls off a win. About 2 point 2 crore. Qualifier 2. Shubman Gill's century. Over 2 point 5 7 crore. Then rain hits the final. It's moved to a Monday. Peak: 3 point 2 1 crore. Twice the opener. A world record, JioCinema said.

The record before this season, set in July 2019? Over 2 point 5 crore. And more than 12 crore unique viewers watched that one match.

Free changes who shows up. And how many, at once. So plan for everyone who could come. Not just those who'd pay. And expect every big match to set a new peak.
