Cricket final, heavy rain: who does the dark store say no to?
transcript
Cricket final night. Orders at one dark store triple. Then it starts pouring. Now you must say no. To whom?
Heavy rain. 30 percent of riders go offline. That leaves about 34 riders. And every trip takes 25 minutes instead of 17.
A normal busiest hour at this store: 192 orders. Tonight, people want three times that. 576. The riders can carry about 106. One order in five.
Keep serving everyone? Estimates grow to an hour. And riders feel they have to race. On wet roads. So shed from the outside in. Far orders burn the most rider minutes. Close the outer cells first. The nearest homes keep fast, honest estimates.
Near the store, the estimate jumps from about 11 minutes to 20 plus. Cold drinks capped at four. One party can't empty them for twenty people. Further out? Not serviceable right now. But you can schedule for later. An honest no.
And the rider? No countdown. Ever. Late is a message to the customer. Never pressure on the rider.
When riders are the bottleneck, spend them where they go furthest. Shed from the outside in. And tell people the truth.
