transcript

Mid-episode, the box streaming your show dies. You keep watching. You probably never notice. Here's why.

Rewind to when you pressed play. The cloud checked you, and handed back a manifest. Inside it: a ranked list of appliance URLs. First, the box inside your ISP. Further down, more. Often one at the internet exchange.

Now, mid-stream, the player asks your ISP's box for chunk 41. Timeout. The box is gone.

Call the cloud for help? That's a new API call. Or sit and wait for routing changes to catch up. Neither. The next URL is already in the player's hands.

It asks the next appliance. Chunk 41 arrives from a little further away. Buffer still healthy? The viewer sees nothing at all. Running low? Adaptive bitrate drops a rung. A brief dip. Never a freeze.

And notice who wasn't involved. The cloud never got a call. Nobody was sent to the origin. The tiers just backed each other up.

The player got its backup list the moment you pressed play. So failover is one more request. Not a rescue mission.
