Right to erasure.
also: right to be forgotten · right to deletion · GDPR Article 17 · erasure request · erasure requests · deletion request · deletion requestsA person's GDPR right (Article 17) to have their personal data deleted, which must reach every system holding it.
the two-minute refresher
- Applies when data is no longer needed, consent is withdrawn and more; refusals exist (legal obligations, legal claims).
- Hard because data is fragmented: databases, search, caches, files, analytics, third parties, backups, logs.
- Build a data map first, then a deletion service that fans out to each system and verifies.
- Backups and logs usually expire by policy rather than being edited; record every deletion in an audit trail.
