also: multi-tenant · multitenancy · multi tenancy · tenant isolation · schema-per-tenant · schema per tenant · database-per-tenant · database per tenantOne software instance serving many customers (tenants), each tenant's data and configuration isolated from the others.
the two-minute refresher
- Shared tables with a tenant_id column: cheapest, millions of tenants, isolation enforced by the app.
- Schema per tenant: database-enforced logical isolation, thousands of tenants.
- Database per tenant: physical isolation, per-tenant backups and residency, hundreds of tenants.
- Many SaaS products mix them: small tenants pooled, big enterprise tenants on their own.
