Durable execution.
also: durable workflow · durable workflows · workflow engine · workflow determinism · deterministic workflow · deterministic workflowsWorkflow code whose progress is persisted step by step, so after a crash it resumes where it left off instead of starting over.
the two-minute refresher
- Every activity completion is recorded in the engine's database (Temporal).
- After a crash the workflow is replayed from history; finished steps aren't re-run.
- Timers, retries and waits of days or months become ordinary code.
- Under the hood it is event sourcing for workflows.
- Workflow code must be deterministic (no random(), no now()); side effects belong in activities, whose results are recorded.
